Lately I’ve been doing a new kind of exercise program. It is called bioDensity, and it’s not just good for my body, it’s good for my mind. It is over at a great place in Rockville called Fitness for Health, which calls itself a gym, but I’ve never been to a gym like this before.

 

When I was first referred to Fitness for Health, I had been diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis, and had heard about their innovative physical therapy program called bioDensity. One of the team members, Willie Sickel, contacted me to introduce himself and tell me a little about the program. BioDensity was actually developed to help combat Osteoporosis.

 

 

He explained that, “Weight-bearing exercises are the key to stimulating bone growth, and the greater the weight applied, the better the results. bioDensity delivers weight—known as osteogenic loading—at multiples of your bodyweight, and beyond what is typically achieved in basic exercise...Research has also shown significant stability and functional movement improvements with multiple populations.” Fitness for Health Website

 

We talked about how although the therapy was originally developed for bone health, there have been others with multiple sclerosis that were deriving benefit from using the bioDensity.  After we got my doctor’s approval (since I also have a heart condition) I made an appointment to get started.

 

When I began, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I mean, Fitness for Health is a facility that does everything from training professional athletes to physical and occupational therapy for children, adults, and seniors. It could have been anything from a room filled with weights to a plain, institutionalized setting.

 

 I was happily surprised. The inside looks like a cross between a playground (complete with trampoline and rock climbing wall) and a video game room, with a few high-tech exercise machines thrown in, just for fun.

 

My fitness specialist who is also the owner, Marc Sickel, met me in the waiting area and led me to one of their high-tech machines that looks like a chair that amazingly I got to...sit in! Generally, when it comes to exercise I’m well, let’s just say I am not one for it. I had been assured that it was not strenuous, but that I would get the maximum level of benefit out of it. Let’s just say I was skeptical. That is not the description of exercise that I always had in my mind...can anyone say sit-ups?

 

But as I sat down in the chair-like machine, my worries began to be assuaged. I was then eased through a series of burst-like exercises that I could do at my own pace. “This,” I thought “was something even I could do.”  Only one of the exercises was standing up! This was fantastic!

 

Then Marc took me over to the Power Plate, which is a, “whole-body vibration platform that allows for reflexive engagement of the neuromuscular system at rapid and repeatable oscillation. This intervention has been clinically shown to increase balance and stability in both healthy and aging-frail populations.”

 

 Basically, I stood on a little platform while it gently vibrated, and then I balanced on one leg and then the other. There was no pressure, so if one day I couldn’t balance for the whole time that was fine. As with the BioDensity, I was led through several exercises.  However, for the Power Plate, instead of “bursts”, most of the exercises were balancing for short periods at a time.

 

Since the sessions are short, you can fit them in anytime, even on your lunch break. My plan was weekly, but since everyone’s individual needs are different and are also based on your goals and schedule, you will work out the frequency with your fitness specialist.

 

Since starting the bioDensity and Power Plate therapies at Fitness for Health, I feel like not only has my health improved, but specifically, I am doing better as a whole. My balance has improved. My energy and stamina have improved. Although MS pain ebbs and flows, I feel that it has also decreased. Without a doubt, bioDensity and Power Plate have made a huge improvement in my life.

 

Just like their top of the line exercise equipment, the atmosphere at Fitness for Health is like none other. The staff make you feel like family. You can tell that they are truly invested in your progress. Although definitely a secondary concern to your health, scheduling appointments is always a quick and pleasant process.
